Twenty-two officials from developing countries visited Nantong for exchanges, extending an “olive branch” to the city’s foreign contracting engineering firms. Developing countries have long been the primary markets for Nantong’s overseas construction projects, and a solid foundation of economic and trade cooperation has been established over the years. Extending an “olive branch” to our city’s foreign contract engineering enterprises
Developing countries constitute the primary market for our city’s overseas engineering contracting projects and have long enjoyed a solid foundation of economic and trade cooperation. On September 3, participants in the “Training Program on Engineering Contracting in Developing Countries,” hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and organized by the Ministry of Commerce’s Institute for Training of International Business Officials, visited Nantong for an inspection and study tour. A total of 22 foreign-trade officials from 15 countries, including Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Pakistan, engaged in exchange discussions with several local firms specializing in overseas engineering contracting, such as Nantong Construction Engineering Group and Suzhong Construction Group.
Nantong’s overseas engineering contracting sector took off in the 1980s. After years of robust development, local firms have progressed from initially undertaking labor and project subcontracts to rapidly assuming full general contracting roles, with their overall strength markedly enhanced and their ability to compete in international markets continuously improving. To date, Nantong is home to 32 enterprises engaged in overseas engineering contracting, 12 of which also hold Ministry of Commerce qualifications for foreign aid projects. Their operations now span more than 70 countries and regions worldwide, with Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Africa emerging as the four principal market segments. Moreover, the scope of their activities has evolved from a traditional focus on building construction to encompass pipeline installation, offshore platform construction, and the export of complete sets of equipment. In 2012, the city’s total turnover from overseas engineering contracts reached US$1.439 billion, up 17.59% year on year, with four firms each recording overseas project revenues exceeding US$200 million.
