The Fifth Session of the Roundtable Conference on China–Africa Cooperation for Transformation, Upgrading, and Win-Win Collaboration Was Held in Wanning City, Hainan Province; Zhang Xiangyang, Chairman of the Group, Attended the Conference and Delivered a Speech at the Corporate High-Level Forum. On November 13, 2014, the Fifth Session of the Roundtable Conference on China–Africa Cooperation was solemnly inaugurated in Wanning City, Hainan Province. The conference was jointly hosted by the Association of Former Chinese Diplomats and the People’s Government of Hainan Province. Attendees at the opening ceremony included senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Hainan Provincial Government, as well as relevant central and governmental departments, along with Saif Ali Iddi, Second Vice President of Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, African ambassadors accredited to China, and prominent Chinese figures.

On November 13, 2014, the Fifth Session of the China–Africa Cooperation Roundtable Conference was solemnly inaugurated in Wanning City, Hainan Province. The conference was jointly organized by the Association of Former Chinese Diplomats and the People’s Government of Hainan Province. Attendees at the opening ceremony included senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Hainan Provincial Government, and relevant central and governmental departments, as well as Saif Ali Iddi, Second Vice President of Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania; African ambassadors to China; and more than 350 prominent Chinese figures, entrepreneurs, experts, scholars, and members of the press. Ji Peiding, President of the Association of Former Chinese Diplomats and Chairman of the Board of the China–Africa Cooperation Roundtable Conference, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Jiang Dingzhi, Governor of Hainan Province; Zhang Ming, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Qian Keming, Chief Economist of the Ministry of Agriculture; Vice President Iddi; Demontes, Chargé d’Affaires of the African Diplomatic Corps in China and Ambassador of Cape Verde to China; and other dignitaries also addressed the gathering. The opening ceremony was presided over by Ambassador Dong Jinyi, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Association of Former Chinese Diplomats. Zhang Xiangyang, Chairman of the Group Company, attended the conference and delivered a keynote address at the Corporate High-Level Forum.
In his address, Chairman Ji stated that the theme of this conference is “Transformation and Upgrading, Win-Win Cooperation.” During the event, we will host the High-Level Business Forum, the China–Africa Agricultural Cooperation Forum, and the China–Africa Tourism Cooperation Forum. These three forums will be closely aligned with the conference theme, examining all aspects of the transformation and upgrading of China–Africa cooperation; exploring the opportunities that such transformation and upgrading present for Chinese enterprises seeking to engage in cooperation in Africa; enabling Chinese entrepreneurs to share their experiences and insights from working in Africa; and providing a platform for African ambassadors accredited to China to offer their perspectives on the transformation and upgrading of China–Africa cooperation and to highlight the investment environment and cooperation opportunities in their respective countries. He noted that the China–Africa Cooperation Roundtable has now been in existence for four years. Throughout this period, we have consistently regarded the Roundtable as a complementary forum to the official intergovernmental China–Africa Cooperation Forum; we have remained committed to fostering China–Africa relations and advancing China–Africa cooperation; we have steadfastly supported Chinese enterprises in expanding into and developing in Africa; and we have persistently leveraged public diplomacy to promote China’s Africa policy and the spirit of shared destiny and friendly cooperation between China and Africa. Chairman Ji emphasized that the China–Africa Cooperation Roundtable has played a positive role in facilitating people-to-people exchanges and economic and trade cooperation between China and Africa. Through this platform, Chinese enterprises have deepened their understanding of Africa and strengthened their confidence in pursuing development there; we have facilitated investments by several Chinese firms in Africa and helped others secure large-scale cooperative projects on the continent. He added that the Roundtable will not rest on these achievements. As veteran diplomats who have long been engaged in friendly cooperation with Africa, we are determined to make the further development of China–Africa relations the lifelong mission of our lives. In the process of creating an upgraded version of China–Africa cooperation, we will redouble our efforts to help Chinese enterprises seize opportunities, provide them with information and advisory services, and encourage strong, reputable Chinese companies to actively participate in the transformation and upgrading of China–Africa cooperation, thereby contributing to the continued growth of the China–Africa friendship and partnership.
The “High-Level Business Forum,” the “China–Africa Agricultural Cooperation Forum,” and the “China–Africa Tourism Cooperation Forum” held during the conference were conducted in a pragmatic and dynamic manner, with insightful and substantive presentations. Zhang Xiangyang, Chairman of the Group, delivered a keynote address at the High-Level Business Forum titled “Cooperation for Transformation and Upgrading: Achieving Mutually Beneficial Win-Win Outcomes” (the full text is reproduced on this page). In addition, the conference hosted a “Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Symposium,” which infused the event with Sino-African cultural elements and paved the way for cultural exchanges between China and Africa in the context of the Sino-African Cooperation Roundtable.
