The Conference Commemorating the 35th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up: Recognition of 100 Classic and High-Quality Projects and Outstanding Units and Individuals in the National Construction Industry Was Held in Beijing On November 28, the China Construction Industry Association convened a recognition conference in Beijing, at which it unveiled the list of 100 classic and high-quality projects from the past 35 years of reform and opening-up and honored outstanding enterprises, distinguished entrepreneurs, and eminent chief engineers in the national construction industry, as well as quality-management–integrity enterprises in the national construction industry for 2014. Zheng Yijun, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Construction and President of the China Construction Industry Association, Li Jian, Deputy Director of the Department of Infrastructure and Housing Construction under the General Logistics Department of the People’s Liberation Army, and leaders from 13 construction industry associations attended the meeting. The conference was chaired by Xu Yiping, Vice President of the China Construction Industry Association.

On November 28, the China Construction Industry Association convened an awards ceremony in Beijing, at which it unveiled a list of 100 classic and high-quality projects spanning the 35 years of reform and opening-up, and honored outstanding enterprises, distinguished entrepreneurs, and eminent chief engineers in the national construction industry, as well as enterprises recognized for quality management and integrity in the construction sector for 2014. Zheng Yijun, former Vice Minister of Construction and President of the China Construction Industry Association, Li Jian, Deputy Director of the Department of Infrastructure and Housing Construction under the General Logistics Department of the People’s Liberation Army, and leaders from 13 construction industry associations attended the meeting. In his address, Chairman Zheng Yijun stated that organizing the selection of 100 Classic and High-Quality Projects Commemorating the 35th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up is an inescapable responsibility of the 14 industry associations. Over the past 35 years of reform and opening-up, the construction sector has achieved unprecedented accomplishments across all its subfields. Construction professionals have inherited and carried forward time-honored techniques while actively learning from and drawing on cutting-edge global technologies and management practices, thereby delivering, with high quality and at rapid pace, a large number of monumental projects characterized by sophisticated engineering and superior craftsmanship. These projects have played a pivotal role in advancing China’s economic development, national defense, cultural progress, and improvements in people’s livelihoods; they vividly showcase the abundant fruits of China’s reform and opening-up and have greatly enhanced the Chinese people’s sense of national pride. The construction of these classic and high-quality projects fully embodies the tenacious spirit of hard work and perseverance, the pioneering spirit of innovation, and the relentless drive for excellence that define the vast ranks of construction professionals. By hosting this selection event, we aim to highlight the remarkable achievements made in the construction sector since the advent of reform and opening-up and to publicize the tremendous contributions of construction workers to the founding of the People’s Republic—this is an inescapable duty of our generation of builders.
He pointed out that surpassing the achievements of our predecessors is the glorious mission of our generation of builders. While China’s construction industry has attained remarkable accomplishments, it still faces certain shortcomings: there are relatively few projects that can truly be regarded as classics. Although some of the projects we have completed have indeed surpassed their predecessors on a technical level, it remains difficult to say that they have likewise achieved a comparable leap in cultural significance. To address these challenges in the course of development, the key lies in cultivating a profound sense of cultural awareness and cultural confidence, in inheriting and carrying forward China’s outstanding architectural heritage, and in striking the right balance between tradition and innovation, between the past and the present. We must approach our rich humanistic and historical legacy as well as our ecological environment with deep reverence, so as to create more landmark projects that embody national character, the spirit of our times, and distinct regional characteristics.
He emphasized the need to seize opportunities, engage in proactive exploration, and strive to transform the mode of development in the construction industry, thereby advancing the modernization of the construction sector. It is essential to clarify key concepts and accurately grasp the substantive meaning of construction industry modernization. The core components of this modernization encompass three main areas: the upgrading and replacement of construction materials, the reform of construction methods, and the digitalization of enterprise management. We must make full use of modern science and technology to transform both the production and management practices of the construction industry, with the aim of significantly enhancing productivity as well as quality and safety standards.
At the meeting, Zhou Jichang, Chairman of the China Highway Construction Industry Association and Vice President of the China Construction Industry Association, read out the “Notice on the Announcement of 100 Classic and High-Quality Projects Commemorating the 35 Years of Reform and Opening-Up.” Meanwhile, Luan Decheng, Vice President of the China Construction Industry Association, read out the “Decision on Commending National Advanced Construction Enterprises, Outstanding Entrepreneurs, and Outstanding Chief Engineers in the Construction Industry,” as well as the “Decision on Conferment of the Honorary Title of ‘National Construction Industry Quality Management Integrity Enterprise’ for 2014 upon 20 Enterprises, Including China State Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd.” Representatives from China Railway Second Bureau Group Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Nantong Second Construction Group Co., Ltd., on behalf of the award-winning enterprises, delivered speeches. More than 800 representatives from construction industry (construction) associations and construction enterprises across the country and from relevant sectors attended the meeting.
