On November 25, the China Construction Industry Association convened the 2020–2021 Luban Award Ceremony and Industry Technology Innovation Conference in Nanning, where 246 Luban Award-winning projects were solemnly recognized and the Top Ten Technological Innovations of the Year were announced.
Ni Hong, Minister of Housing and Urban–Rural Development, and Zhang Xiaohong, Vice Minister; Lan Tianli, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee and Chairman of the Autonomous Region, and Xu Xianhui, Vice Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; Chinese Academy of Engineering Academicians Xiao Xuwen, Ding Lieyun, and Xu Jian; Qi Ji, President of the China Construction Industry Association, along with Vice Presidents Wu Huijuan and Liu Jinzhang (who also serves as Secretary-General), and Zhu Zhengju, Chairman of the Supervisory Board; as well as heads of relevant departments and bureaus of the Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development, pertinent authorities of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local governments and industry associations, and award-winning enterprises of the Luban Prize, all attended the meeting, which was chaired by Liu Jinzhang, Vice President and Secretary-General of the China Construction Industry Association. Chairman Zhang Xiangyang attended the ceremony and received the Luban Golden Statue Award, accompanied by Li Guang, Deputy General Manager of the Group and General Manager of the Wuxi Branch; Dai Jianbin, Deputy General Manager and General Manager of the Guangxi Branch; and Wang Jinfeng, Deputy General Manager of the Wuxi Branch and Project Manager for the Luban Prize.

During the 2020–2021 period, the Xinrui Hospital project in Wuxi New District, constructed by Nantong Construction Engineering Group Co., Ltd. with participation from Nantong Construction Installation Engineering Co., Ltd., and the Phase II expansion of the Jiangsu Provincial Government Service Center and Public Resources Trading Center, in which Nantong City Architectural Decoration & Finishing Co., Ltd. also took part, both jointly won China’s highest honor in the construction industry—the Luban Award. This achievement marks a remarkable milestone for the company: it has, for the first time, secured three Luban Awards in the same year—covering civil engineering, installation, and interior decoration. These prestigious awards are highly esteemed and hard-earned, making this a truly celebratory occasion. They further enhance Nantong Construction’s industry image and brand standing, while also contributing new achievements to Nantong’s reputation as the “Hometown of Construction.”
Lan Tianli, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee and Chairman of the Autonomous Region, delivered a welcoming address at the conference. He extended warm congratulations on the successful convening of the event. He stated that the Luban Spirit—characterized by relentless pursuit of excellence and continuous improvement—will undoubtedly guide and inspire construction enterprises across the board to carry forward China’s fine traditions in the construction industry, elevate the quality of engineering projects, and enhance the reputation of the “Made in China” brand in the global construction sector.
Ni Hong, Minister of Housing and Urban–Rural Development, delivered a speech at the conference. He highly commended the Luban Award for its pivotal role in guiding enterprises to improve their quality assurance systems, accelerate technological progress, promote energy conservation and emissions reduction, and build strong corporate brands. He expressed the hope that the China Construction Industry Association would remain true to its original mission, steadfastly focusing on advancing high-quality development of China’s construction industry and creating a high-quality life for the people, while upholding fairness and impartiality, selecting only the best among the excellent, and striving for “four greater emphases” and “two coordinated approaches.” First, with regard to award-winning projects, greater emphasis should be placed on projects that serve the public interest, such as residential housing and municipal public utilities; on projects driven by scientific and technological innovation; on green and low-carbon projects; and on projects that showcase China’s cultural confidence. Second, in terms of the geographic locations of the winning projects and the enterprises they represent, it is essential to strike a balanced approach between economically developed regions and less-developed regions, as well as between large construction firms and small and medium-sized ones. On this new journey, taking the Luban Award as a model and a guiding force, we must work to ensure that China produces more high-quality projects that satisfy the public, reassure the government, and stand the test of history. In light of the need to comprehensively study, grasp, and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, he also outlined the new tasks facing the development of China’s construction industry: first, to make people’s satisfaction the ultimate goal; second, to let scientific and technological innovation lead the way; third, to use deepened reform as the driving force; fourth, to ground our efforts in cultural confidence; fifth, to rely on talent development as the supporting pillar; and sixth, to view the global market as the stage for our endeavors. He called on all construction enterprises and engineering practitioners to set even higher standards and stricter requirements, and to strive to deliver more high-quality projects that are distinguished by outstanding quality, cutting-edge technology, and energy efficiency and environmental protection, thereby making new and greater contributions to accelerating the building of a powerful nation in construction, advancing Chinese modernization, and continuously fulfilling the people’s aspirations for a better life.
In his closing remarks at the conference, Qi Ji, President of the China Construction Industry Association, pointed out that with the advent of a new stage of development, the quality of construction projects has taken on new dimensions. The Luban Award will continue to integrate innovative development concepts into its selection process, thereby driving the industry’s transformation and upgrading toward greater industrialization, green practices, and intelligent technologies. At the same time, the China Construction Industry Association will resolutely implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, fully leverage the Luban Award’s role as a model and leader, shoulder the historic mission of the new era, and steadfastly promote high-quality development of the industry.
At the conference, Wu Huijuan, Vice President of the China Construction Industry Association, read out the decision on awarding the Luban Prize for Construction Projects. The event also featured special lectures by Chinese Academy of Engineering Academicians Ding Lieyun and Cui Kai, and unveiled the Top Ten Annual Technological Innovations, including the highly efficient construction technology for a new type of prefabricated shear-wall structure. In addition, the “Construction Industry Technology Development Report (2022)” and the “Annual Report on the Development of China’s Construction Industry (2021)” were released, representing the sector’s annual technological progress and overall development trends.
The Luban Award is China’s highest honor for construction project quality, often referred to as the “Oscar” of the construction industry. It is awarded annually, with a concentrated ceremony held every two years, serving as official recognition of outstanding project performance and reflecting the nation’s and the industry’s expectations for technological advancement and the spirit of craftsmanship.
